Flat Granny Visits the Jersey Shore
by Debbie Hommel, ACC/MC/EDU, CTRS

The Jersey Shore has had a special visitor these past few weeks.  Flat Granny arrived
mid June and has been visiting beaches, boardwalks, nursing homes, and activity
professional meetings.  She has been greeted with much enthusiasm by everyone she
has met, including one cute lifeguard named Johnny on Long Beach Island.   Who is
Flat Granny you ask?  Flat Granny is the paper friend of the Greenwood Manor Activity
Department in Xenia, Ohio.  Flat Granny has been traveling via snail mail to explore the
United States to meet new friends.  Flat Granny was created by Amy Shade, ADC, and
the activity director of Greenwood Manor.  This project is based on the popular “Flat
Stanley” project done by many elementary school children.     Flat Granny has been to
Las Vegas, Baton Rouge, Massachusetts, Iowa, the NCCAP Symposium in Ohio,
Indiana, Kansas, Nebraska, Kentucky, Canada, NY and even outer space.  You can
read all about her travels on her Flat Granny’s Adventure Blog at

Being the savvy world traveler, we wanted to make sure her NJ visit was memorable.
Flat Granny could not have come at a better time as NJ summers are the best!  NJ
beaches and boardwalks are sunny, clean and have lots of tasty food to try.  During her
stay, Flat Granny visited Ocean City Boardwalk, Long Beach Island and Seaside
Heights Boardwalk.  Ocean City is known for its family atmosphere and she was able to
take in the sights and have a piece of pizza.  She spent a day on Long Beach Island
where she enjoyed getting a tan, being buried in the sand and meeting a nice young
lifeguard named Johnny.

While at the Seaside Heights Boardwalk, the cast of the MTV reality show Jersey Shore
(Snookie, the Situation, J Wow and Pauly D) were in town.  Flat Granny hung out at the
Jersey Shore House and visited the T-shirt shop where they work.  While on the
Boardwalk, J-Wow walked right by Flat Granny while she was shopping.  We can only
hope Flat Granny will be seen in the background during one of the Jersey Shore
episodes next season.

To round out the evening of fun at the Seaside boardwalk, Flat Granny had her photo
taken in a photo booth, rode the carousel and had funnel cake.  Thank goodness it was
the weekend because she slept in the next day.

In between fun on the beach, Flat Granny assisted with the MEPAP classes – attending
MEPAP I at Manchester Manor and MEPAP II at the Lutheran Home in Moorestown.  The
students loved meeting Flat Granny and she fit right in.  She even got in trouble for
texting in class.

Flat Granny worked on her professional development while in NJ, attending a meeting
of the MOCAP (local NJ activity professional group.  She was able to accrue two hours
of continuing education toward her NCCAP certification.  Continuing education is
important at any age, Flat Granny said.  She was honored when the President of
MOCAP asked her to assist in swearing in the new officers for their next term.

You can see all the photos of Flat Granny and her NJ adventures on her Facebook Page
– Flat Granny or I have them on my DH Special Services Facebook page as well.  You
can invite Flat Granny to come visit your residents and facility via her blog or Facebook
page.  It has been a lot of fun involving her in my life and showing her the sights.  I have
gotten plenty of strange looks from bystanders as I have taken her photos.  But, I have
also met some nice people who were interested in meeting Flat Granny.  It has been
very enjoyable seeing my typical day to day life through Flat Granny’s eyes.
