George Washington Tidbits:

Cherry Tree Craft

Supplies Needed:
  • Small twigs or branches
  • Glue
  • Pink tissue paper
  • Construction paper
  • Pencil

1. Glue your twigs onto your construction paper. If you can't find any twigs you can
always paint or draw on your branches.

2. Cut some small squares of pink tissue paper, about 1" X 1" in size.

3. Wrap a square of tissue paper around the end of a pencil. Dip the end in glue, and
glue it onto a branch of your tree. Continue gluing pink tissue onto all of the branches
until your tree is complete.

Cherry SalaD

• 1 cup dried tart cherries
• 1 (11-ounce) can mandarin orange sections, drained
• 2 kiwi, peeled and sliced
• 1/4 cup orange juice
• 1/4 cup sifted confectioners sugar
• 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1/4 cup slivered almonds, toasted
Combine dried cherries, kiwi slices and mandarin orange sections in a bowl. Mix the
orange juice, cinnamon and confectioners sugar in a bowl and mix. Pour the juice
mixture over fruit mixture and gently mix. Cover and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours. Stir the
mixture occasionally. Remove from the refrigerator and sprinkle with toasted almonds.
Makes 4 servings.

Abraham Lincoln Tidbits    
  • Mary’s parents disagreed with her marrying Abraham because he had a poor
  • Abraham had four children, Robert Todd Lincoln, Edward Lincoln, Willie Lincoln,
    Tad Lincoln. Only Robert Todd Lincoln survived into adulthood.
  • He was the first president to be assassinated.
  • He was the tallest U.S president at 6ft 4 inches.
  • He patented a system to alter buoyancy of steamboats in 1849.
  • He was the first president to have a beard.
  • Lincoln was fond of pets, and owned horses, cats, dogs and a turkey.

Abe Lincoln Poundcake

  • 1/2 lb. butter
  • 1 2/3 c. sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 2 c. sifted flour
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Cream butter and sugar thoroughly. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.
Sift flour with nutmeg. Add gradually to creamed mixture, mixing well. Pour into paper-
lined loaf pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hours.

Abe Lincoln’s Log Cabin

Supplies Needed:

  • Small empty , cleaned and dried milk carton
  • small pretzel sticks and squares
  • brown craft paper
  • craft glue

Glue milk container spout shut. Cover the outside of the entire mild carton with brown
paper. Glue pretzel sticks to the sides of the carton crossing at each corner until all
sides are covered. To make the roof, spread a generous amount of glue over the top of
carton and place pretzel sticks side by side until the top is totally covered. Add windows
and doors by gluing square pretzels on the front and on each side of the pretzel log

How Well Do You Know Your Presidents?

This fun President’s Day game will test whether you know as much as you think you
know about past American presidents. Prior to the game, prepare answer sheets that
have the names of 10-20 presidents listed down the left hand-side. On the right-hand
side, have the same number of blank spaces down the page. The object of the game is
to, in pairs if desired, correctly list the presidents in chronological order of when they
were president. The person or pair with the most correct answers is the winner of this
