Founded by Activity Professionals
for Activity Professionals...

NAAP is the only national group that
represents activity professionals in geriatric
settings exclusively. NAAP serves as a
catalyst for both professional and personal
growth and has come to be recognized by
government officials as the voice of the
activity profession on national issues
concerning long-term care facilities,
retirement living, assisted living, adult day
services, and senior citizen centers. NAAP
is nationwide in scope with a growing
membership in Canada and Bermuda.

NAAP successfully worked with members of
Congress to secure a change in the nursing
home reform title of the 1987 Omnibus
Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA).
Through our efforts, it became mandatory
that an activity program, directed by a
qualified professional, be provided in every
nursing home that receives Medicare
and/or Medicaid funds.

NAAP was the only professional activity
association to participate in HCFA's
workgroups that revised OBRA's interpretive
guidelines now in effect.

NAAP provides assistance at the state level
to promote certification of activity
professionals, working toward uniform
professional standards for activity practice.

April Fool’s Day – Programming Humor
Throughout the Month

April Fool’s Day falls on a Thursday This year. Why not plan some
humorous activities for that day, as well as throughout the month? In fact, studies have
shown humor to be beneficial to our health and the health of those we serve, so we
should plan for it every month. Listed below are just a few ideas to try:
•        Get a group together and read some funny jokes and riddles. You can find books
at the library, Online or use a search engine to find them. Ask the residents if they can
remember any jokes they would like to tell the group.
•        Show a comedy movie, whether it is an oldie such as a Bob Hope movie or DVD of
the Jack Benny Show, or something more modern such as “Mrs. Doubtfire”. Residents
enjoy something that makes them laugh and something they can relate to.
•        Use a search engine to find funny song titles (you can even be specific to a genre
– such as country) and use these in a group. This will lead to much laughter as well as
discussion on their part.
•        Have funny dress up days: silly hat day, crazy sock day, backward clothes day, etc.
Residents can even make a silly hat in a craft group and have a parade to show off what
they made.
•        Have an April Fool’s Party with silly foods, silly songs, and silly dress/accessories.
You can go Online to get ideas of foods to serve and of songs to play. You can even pick
a silly theme and use that as the basis for the party and the ideas you will use. If you go
to a search engine and look for “silly party ideas” or “wacky party ideas” you’ll come up
with all sorts of things you can use.
•        Have a program and discussion about famous funny people. Again, the Internet
has a vast wealth of information to help you with this. You can even put images into a
Powerpoint presentation, if you have the means to do that at your community, and show
pictures of the comedians/famous people. If you do not have this technology available,
you can still print off photos of the men and women and pass those around the group
as you discuss each one and their impact on our society through the use of their
comedy medium.
•        Have a program of Humorous short stories, again utilize the Library or computer
•        Conduct a program of humorous quotes, find many Online and turn it into a
discussion group
•        Use nursery rhymes in a program. Have residents help complete them, this is
great for their memory too and will also elicit discussion about their childhood and the
fun things they did.
•        Create group or individual collages, using old magazines, of humorous/funny
pictures. What is considered humorous and funny will be up to each individual resident.
This can be done in groups or on a one to one basis.
•        In a small or large group, give the residents a list of words and help them create
their own humorous short story or poems. The Leader can write it on a large white
erasable board, flip chart, or use the overhead projector/transparencies and display it
on a screen or wall.

Above all, just laugh and have fun!
