Holiday/Celebration: Holiday Easy Day

Overview: Holiday Easy Day is not a real holiday/celebration but a theme.
December has so many activities in it that an Activity Director can be
exhausted before Christmas. Set up an easy day with activities that will be
easy on you and allow the residents some time to breath as well.

Object: Promotes
•        Cognitive
•        Sensory
•        Social

Activities: (Activity name suggestions)
1.        Special Delivery
2.        Peppermint Spa
3.        Movie Time

Activity 1 – Special Deliver (cognitive)
Materials: Download a free Holiday word game at one of these sites:
http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/word-search-puzzles.html
http://www.apples4theteacher.com/holidays/christmas/printables/
Instruction: Have volunteer or staff to hand out the game sheets to all
residents along with an information sheet for them to review with the
resident. The information sheet will have a short note that instructs the
resident to complete the word game with a specific time to return it to the
AD room for a chance to win a prize. If resident is room bound, ask
volunteer or staff member to return and collect the completed game sheet
for the drawing. You can have one or several winners and announce the
winner(s) over the facility speaker or post winner(s) on the bulletin board so
they can receive their gift. NOTE: If you really want to make it easy, just
have volunteer/staff pass out the game sheets for residents to enjoy at
their leisure.

Activity 2 – Peppermint Spa (sensory)
Contact your local cosmetology school to see if five to ten students will
come out to do basic manicures on the residents. Schedule the students
through out the day so residents can get a manicure at their leisure. If
students can only come at a specific time then make sure the times are on
the activity calendar, post on bulletin boards and announce over facility
speakers.
Ask kitchen to brew hot peppermint tea to offer residents and students to
enjoy while waiting for their manicures to be done. You may also have
residents coming just for the tea. Ask volunteers to serve the tea. The smell
and taste of the hot peppermint tea will refresh the senses and satisfy the
taste buds.

Activity 3 – Movie Time (Social)
Select a holiday movie and at the end of the movie have a high level
resident start a discussion about the movie content. This can last for 10
minutes or however long the discussion last.
Blessings
